Province of Fryslân
The province of Fryslân has a population of approx. 650.000 inhabitants. It is a largely rural and argricultural province with a few bigger towns and cities. Fryslân is member of the Energy Valley Foundation, a coalition of the northern provinces in the Netherlands together with the 4 bigger cities and bigger private companies such as Gasunion, NOM, and energy companies.
Energy Agreement
The Energy Valley provinces have closed an Energy Agreement with the national government. In short it says that they will help the national government in reaching its climate goals for 2011 and do more than their fair share. Concrete the goal of the agreement is to produce 40-50 MW sustainable energy and reduce 4-5 Megatons CO2 by the end of the year 2011.
A second but just as important goal of the Agreement is that it should be beneficial to the regional economy as well. The Agreement therefore is an economical as well as an environmental program.
The 100.000 vehicles programThe 100.000 vehicles program is an executive plan of theme 3: sustainable mobility. The aim is to have 100.000 vehicles (cars, trains, boats, trucks ,scooters etc) moving on any sort of sustainable propulsion in the 3 Northern provinces by the year 2015. Fryslân is the lead partner in the implementation of theme 3 and therefore the 100.00 vehicles program (other provinces lead other themes).
